Snail Tale

Meet Turbo.  The kids have enjoyed finding all kinds of new animal friends in our garden.  Our latest buddy is a friendly snail that happened to wander (or should I say slime) his way into my kids' lives.

Sierra was desperate to make him an indoor pet for the family to take care of, but I convinced her that he wanted to live outside.  She determined he needed a house.  I thought she might pick something leafy with a few twigs.  She had something a little bit more grandeur in mind.

Turbo wandered out of his palace sometime during the night much to the kids' disappointment and his now wondering around the backyard waiting to be found again.

Garden Harvest

Sierra and Zach set up a little garden in a corner of our backyard.  They planted lots of herbs, lettuce, broccoli, and carrots.  Sierra was sooo excited to pick from her garden.  The lettuce has done extremely well and most of the herbs too.  We made a salad tonight in honor of our two little green thumbs.  We were all excited to daydream about expanding the garden next summer to include tomatoes and strawberries.  Wish us luck!

Climbing THE Wrekin

Today our 1, 3 and 5 year olds climbed to the top of  a local "mountain" known as The Wrekin.  It is considered the highest point in the area, perhaps the inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth, and could have been created by a giant according to local legend.  I have left you more info at the bottom of this post for you avid readers/historians/random fact lovers.

We had an absolutely gorgeous day in Telford and decided that we could attempt the Wrekin.  Zach strapped on our newly acquired, pre-loved backpack and made the long trek with Sully on his back.  We packed a picnic lunch and enjoyed the views from the top.  I think the pics say it all.

Almost There: This was our 3/4 point.  We had a great view overlooking Shropshire (including Wellington and Admaston).  Zach and I couldn't believe a 3 year old had climbed so high.  We thought on his first hike we might have turned back by this point.  However, Desmond proved us all wrong.  He is forever our little tortoise, but it just goes to show that slow and steady wins the race.

Hilltop Moment:  The hilltop has two markers and we took photo opts at both of them.  Sierra was so excited to have climbed the mountain twice and wanted to make it a goal to get to the top 10 times. The kids were also happy to sit down and rest (and EAT!).  We had a picnic lunch with this view.  Not bad for a Saturday!

Downhill Stretch: We were so excited to be finally walking downhill.  Sullivan was overjoyed to get a short break from the backpack and hiked the first leg down.

Sierra's Fav. Spot: For some reason, Sierra's favorite spot is a mini mountain just before the top of The Wrekin. We stopped and got pictures on the way down.  I think it also might have something to do with the view.

All in all a fantastic afternoon outing with the family!

For more fun info about The Wrekin keep reading:
The Wrekin is perhaps Shropshire’s best known landmark, a curious legendary hill that, from this way it looks like a mountain, and that way, it crouches low. From the top you can see fifteen counties.

It has been suggested that the Wrekin may have been the inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth in the acclaimed series of books 'The Lord of the Rings, although this is subject to some debate.Tolkien lived in the West Midlands and visited the magnificent Shropshire landscape frequently.

The Wrekin dominates the view of Telford and Ironbridge, being 1335 ft tall and who would have guessed that Shropshire folk-lore tells us it was built by a giant who took a dislike to Shrewsbury.
The Giant in question was a Welshman who dug a spadeful of soil and planned to dump it into the river severn, flooding the town.

However, whilst slogging across the Shropshire hills, this giant lost his bearings and having only got as far as Wellington stopped for a rest. Sitting on the roadside he called out to a passing cobbler trying to find the direction to Shrewsbury. He told the cobbler he was going to flood the town.
The cobbler, a quick thinking business man, thought for a moment and realized if the giant flooded Shrewsbury, he’d lose all his customers.

The cobbler quickly emptied his sack of worn out shoes onto the roadside and told the giant that he’d worn these shoes out himself coming from Shrewsbury.

The giant, thinking better of his plan then decided to forget about Shrewsbury and go home instead.
The Giant dumped his spadeful of soil on the roadside, and then scraped his boots clean with his spade.

The mound of earth became the Wrekin and the smaller hill where he scraped his boots became the Ercall.

Evening Bike Rides

We have a great public footpath directly behind our house.  While Zach was away in the United States, we decided to get out for lots of evening bike rides.  Sierra keeps getting better and better.  We are hoping to help her get rid of her stabilizers (training wheels) by the end of the summer.

Library Cuddles

Hot cocoa and a cozy place to read books!  What could be more fun on a Sunday morning!  The kids and I try to keep ourselves busy while Zach's away.  One of our favorite traditions is to get a coffee next to our library right before they open up.  Then we head upstairs and pick out a bag full of books.  But, not before enjoying a few of the fine book nooks the library has to offer.  Sullivan even joined in this trip.

Desmond's Induction Days at Primary School

This cheesy smile just got done with his first two induction days at his new primary school. Currently, he is attending nursery school 3 days a week, but in September he will start full-time school. For the last two days, he has spent 3 hours meeting the teachers, checking out the classroom, and playing the classmates he will have in the fall.  He has done extremely well.  He was able to identify his name tag on the table.  He didn't cry when I had to say good-bye!  Pretty big stuff for a 3 year old.  In fact, we thought it was McDonald's happy meal worthy. Looking forward to all the milestones to come.

Desmond's Preschool Graduation

So technically, he didn't graduate yet.  He ends his nursery school term in July, but he did take photos in his cap and gown.  I am terribly biased, but he looks absolutely adorable.  Can't believe we are a month away from saying good-bye to nursery school and hello to primary school! Time flies when you are having fun!

Zach's Big Win

Zach traveled to Newcastle for the Chemical Industry Association awards. His plant site was nominated for the evening's biggest award, Responsible Care Award. Zach's plant site voted on three outstanding individuals to attend.  Zach took all three guys to the black tie event.  They arrived a few hours before the event and went to dinner at a restaurant overlooking a river (see below).  Afterwards they put on their tuxedos and headed to the awards ceremony.  Their award is one of the toughest to earn.  He and the team were obviously elated to win and to receive recognition for all the hard work that they do.  The awards were given out by someone from the BBC television network.  Zach couldn't remember her name.  We could not be prouder of our all-star!!!!
